Got Hope

People facing cancer need hope. Hope that the treatment will work. Hope that the cancer will go away and never come back. Hope to find a cure. Hope that when all this is over, you will still have a job and your finances will be in tact. Hope that your family will embrace the news with grace and be able to help you in these trying times. Truth is, we don’t know for sure how all of these things will turn out.

But what I do know for certain is that you can have security and hope for the eternal future, regardless of what may happen to you on this earth. Let me explain.

When mom was diagnosed with cancer in December 2008, I will admit that life seemed pretty terrible. I foolishly decided to research her type of cancer on my own one night so that I would know what we were up against. Big mistake. For the next several days I was a mess. While I tend to be an optimistic person, I am also a realist. After doing my research, I realized that mom’s chances were not good (so the websites said). She had one of the worst types of cancer. I felt like life was falling apart and I didn’t know if it would ever be okay again. We were both very scared.

Despite all of this, there was an underlying peace. An underlying peace that even if mom didn’t make it, we would both be okay. I can say this with confidence because I know my mom is a believer in and a follower of Christ. I knew that no matter what happened to her here on earth, she would be with God in Heaven and I would see her again someday. It is this hope that I want to share with you. Trust me, this is worth reading!

By the way, don’t simply sit there and take my word on all of this. Yes, I’m being honest. But go find a Bible and read this for yourself so you know it’s not just me saying it… realize that this is real, not just something I am telling you about that has no meaning.

If you’re skeptical about whether or not the Bible can be trusted, I would challenge you to at least pray and ask God to show you in some way that He is real, and that He does love you. I realize that to some reading this, the topic of God/religion is a touchy one, and I thank you for reading this far. You may think I’m weird for my beliefs and I’m okay with that. I have seen God’s work in my life in such an amazing way, and I feel that to not share the joy I have found in my relationship in Christ would be selfish.

My relationship with Christ started when I was 18. I became a Christian by asking the Lord into my life to rescue me from my sin. It was not something I was born into or have “always been.” It was also not something I could earn. It was a decision that I had to make. I came to understand three basic, simple truths from God’s Word, the Bible, and I want to share these truths with you right now.

First I realized I was a sinner. Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That simply means we are all sinners. Yourself included. Myself included. The idea here is that even though we may do good things at times, we still sin and are not as good as God (“fall short of the glory of God”). Because we are sinners, we aren’t worthy to be in God’s presence because He is so holy. The problem is that God is in Heaven… so since we are not worthy to be in His presence, this means we cannot be in Heaven. Romans 3:23 says that “For the wages of sin is death…” (death in this verse is referring to separation from God/from Heaven) That is what we have earned (a wage) for our sin. But God loves us and wanted to find a way to fix this problem so that we could enjoy fellowship with Him someday.

That’s where John 3:16 comes in. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Yes, God loves you so much that He wants to spend eternity with you …so much so that He willingly gave His only Son so that it would be possible. You see, God sent His only Son, Jesus, to Earth. Jesus was born to the virgin Mary and the whole time He was growing up, He never sinned. He is the only One who has never sinned because He is the only one that is God’s son. Because He never sinned, He is the only One able to take the eternal punishment of sin for us. More specifically, for you. He doesn’t have a “sin-debt” of His own to pay, so He is able to pay for ours. He was the last person who deserved to suffer the punishment of sin – He never committed any sins of His own! But He WANTED to do that for us so we could have the opportunity to enter Heaven and enjoy full fellowship with God. Romans 5:8 says, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Christ allowed Himself to be crucified on the cross for you and me so that we could go to Heaven. When He was on that cross, He carried the weight of our sin on His shoulders. His beard was ripped from His face. People spat on Him, jeered at him, and gave Him vinegar to drink when He was thirsty. They put a crown of thorns on His head to mock Him and drove massive nails through His hands and His feet. He was God’s son and could have performed a miracle, taking Himself off of the cross. But He didn’t. Nails didn’t hold Him to the cross. Love did.

After Christ was crucified on the cross, Christ was put into a tomb, but He did not stay there. The Bible tells us that He came alive again on the third day – He could do that because He was God’s Son! And, of course, this is what we celebrate on Easter.

That’s it. That’s the gospel…the message of hope. The hope that no matters what happens to you in your earthly life, you can know that you have a secure future with God in Heaven someday.

If you believe what I’ve explained about and realize that:

1. You’re a sinner
2. Christ died for your sin and only He can rescue you from your eternal punishment
3. He came alive again

The Bible says that you can accept His gift – accept the gift of salvation, which is the way to Heaven! Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” By the way, it doesn’t say “for whosoever shall do their best to live a holy and good life shall be saved.” True, as followers of Christ we should live our best life to honor Him because we love Him, but salvation from sin is a GIFT according to the Bible. A gift cannot be earned. Romans 6:23 states, “…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” All you have to do is accept it.

God wants you to accept His Word and take Christ as your personal Savior so that He can enjoy fellowship with you in Heaven someday. If you have never done that, you can do it right now. Just pray and tell the Lord that you believe those things and that you want Him as your Savior. You certainly can use your own words, but if you aren’t quite sure what to say, but know you want to accept this gift, here are some words you could say:

Dear Lord, I know that I’m a sinner and I believe in my heart that Jesus died on the cross for me so that I could escape eternal punishment for my sin. Please forgive me of my sin, come into my heart, and rescue me from my sin. Please help me learn more about you and follow your will for my life. Thank you so much! Amen

Wow! Did you just pray something like that??? Please tell me!! Send me a message at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.! I want to be happy for you and pray for you.

By the way…that gift can never be taken away or lost. Hebrews 13:5 says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” No matter what happens, if you meant it when you prayed, God will never leave you. Regardless of how you feel. Despite what future mistake you will make… God’s love is amazing and never-ending! I know, at least for me, that’s hard to comprehend – in today’s society, it often feels we aren’t good enough for unconditional love. Pray that today God will show you in a special way how much He loves you!

I cannot imagine not having the Lord in my life…He helps me through trials, gives me blessings throughout my day, strength to face the world…but most importantly, He gave me the free gift of salvation, and because of that I know that no matter what happens to me during my earthly life, I know that I have hope because one day I will spend an eternity with God in Heaven! Even if life on this Earth is nothing but trial after trial, I can be thankful because God has given me the promise of a joyful eternal life when all I really deserve is hell. I really hope that you have accepted that gift as well!

I know this may be a lot to take in if you have never heard this before. Don’t be afraid to be real with God and tell Him how you feel about all of this in and ask Him to help you understand and know what you should do with this information. I used to feel like I had to “save face” in front of God, but the truth is He already knows what we’re thinking.
